So...
I have come to the firm conclusion that I am a book addict. I can't go into a bookstore without taking something out. Also, it's only four days into the new year, and I've finished four books and read extensively in two others. And one of those books was a work of literary criticism - a collection of essays about The Chronicles of Narnia (there were some really good essays and some completely off the wall. I think my favorite was about the importance of food and eating to Narnia). I'm also amused that now my writing shelf contains two books about the writing process, a dictionary (which yes, I do read for funsies), six books of literary criticism (two general, three science fiction, and the new one on Narnia), five encyclopedias (Werewolves and other animal-based evil creatures, Vampires and other human-based evil creatures, signs and symbols, a general magical creature compendium, and NASA's Encyclopedia of Space, and a book on selling fiction. Screw Bella Swann, books are my personal brand of heroin. Current Mood: literary | | Friday, January 1st, 2010 | | 6:52 pm |

Where I have been and where I am going
I haven't been online for a couple of reasons... 1) I am insanely stressed right now, but do not particularly want to talk about it. 2) I went to Indiana and GenCon over last weekend. It was insanely fun and I got to see Kixie (woot!) and spend a lot of time with Russ (more woot!) I'll talk about it later. 3) My modem is broken. Shawn's getting a new one for me, but he still has it, so no intratubes at my house. I'm at the library right now. 4) Doctor's visits which equals blah. 5) Well, this is just relevant until 6:30 today, when my alarm goes off, but I have lost my cell phone. And: From this Friday to next Friday, I will be in NoVA. Call me... Thursday if you want to hang out. Tomorrow's medical procedure involves sedation, and I may not be all there. Or call my cell today sometime after 6, when I'm sure I'll be home. Current Mood: tired | | Monday, July 20th, 2009 | | 6:38 am |
So, Obama
Since I haven't delved into politics for awhile, let's just have one little entry. For those who think of Obama as relatively benign, don't look at the man, look at who he surrounds himself with. His Science Czar for example: http://www.lewrockwell.com/grigg/grigg-w102.htmlDon't you just love people that respect human rights? Current Mood: cynical | | Saturday, June 27th, 2009 | | 2:35 am |
Happy update!
This has been a good end of the week. Thursday was obscene amounts of fun, and Caitlin and Brian had their baby today, and I'm seeing Russ tomorrow, and meeting the baby on Sunday. For why Thursday was so fun: I had two coupons for a discount if you got two of either Freschetta Frozen Pizzas or Edward's Pies. So I got a bunch of people together (Shawn, Rin, Maggie, and Rachel), bought two pizzas (four cheese and five cheese) and two pies (Boston cream and chocolate cream) and we all had pizza and pie. Rachel brought a game that's basically make up a story with cards, so that was fun. Then she read aloud some awful Star Wars fanfiction she wrote when she was 10. That inspired me to read something awful, so I read *sonia*'s terrible gay porn story. When it got to the part where the two of them were contorting, Maggie and Rin tried to act out the body postures described, but as written, it was impossible. We figured out that one guy had a second head growing out of his stomach, and the other had one growing out of his back. After that hilarity, we watched The Nostalgia Critic on 'Moonwalker' as a tribute to Michael Jackson, then watched the 'Smooth Criminal' video and tried to figure out what the lyrics were. The evening ended with Star Wars LIFE, where Rin became a Sith Lord, but was ultimately defeated by Shawn, the most powerful Jedi of them all. All with pizza and pies. And it was a Thursday, and Thursdays are made for chaos. I can't wait for Sunday ^_^ Current Mood: happy | | Thursday, June 25th, 2009 | | 12:13 pm |
One down...
Who knows how many to go. My stomach is working properly. It's nice that I don't have to get treated for that, but it's kind of frustrating that that wasn't it. | | Monday, June 22nd, 2009 | | 11:06 am |
Well, slightly good news...
I realized one of the contributing factors to my nausea and complete lack of appetite: my summer allergies. Instead of giving me a runny nose, as usual, all the excess is pooling in my stomach. It's kind of gross, but less freak-out worthy. It definitely explains the empty stomach nausea. I realized this last night, since I'm staying at Dad's house. All the windows are open, and since there are even more trees and more pollen than at my apartment, my nose started running, though my stomach felt exactly the same. Still, stupid razza-frackin' allergies. Not saying that I'm not having extra trouble with the ED, but this explains at least a bit of the extra trouble. This may not be the best forum...
But I promised I wouldn't keep things a secret from my friends. Welcome once again to the Jennie Whines About Her Eating Disorder Hour. I've talked with two different doctors this month, who both asked me how much I ate. I usually eat once or twice a day, so I guessed at about 1200-1500 calories. Well, wouldn't you know, but I'm rapidly becoming obsessed with counting those calories and consuming fewer and fewer. It didn't help that I discovered I lost 9 of the 10 lbs I gained doing my student teaching while starving myself. I'm trying to figure every calorie put into my mouth and weighing myself about five times every day... every time I eat, and every few hours that I don't. Saturday, I didn't eat until 4:30, but over the course of the evening I ate more than 2000. Sunday, I could only bring myself to eat 500... I talked to Dad, who told me to go out and get something to eat. I did, and after that I felt so disgusting that I had to fight not to purge. I got desperate and called Shawn, who thank God was home and let me come over, because otherwise, I don't think I would have been able to avoid it. I ended up purging a little while my head was muddled from sleep, but not all of my food. I managed to eat twice today and I bought a dry erase board that's now on my fridge with a list of the minimum amount of food that I MUST eat tomorrow. Just looking at it is making me feel a little sick, even though it isn't very much. I go in Wednesday to find out if my stomach is emptying properly... which might contribute to my problem of rarely feeling hungry, or my feeling fine, then feeling completely ravenous minutes later. After that, I'm getting tested for allergies to lactose and gluten, for ulcers, for Celiac's disease, for IBS, and the remotest possibility - non or pre-cancerous colon polyps that might be interfering with my stomach. I am trying to find a therapist... but if I ever call any of you guys sounding kind of desperate, please talk to me. It's easier to eat and easier not to purge if I feel like someone will know. Yesterday
I walked four miles in 95 minutes. And I don't feel all achy and terrible today, so that's nice. I also spent four hours talking to Caitlin, which was lovely, and found Lindsay! I've also gotten better at eating only half of what I'm given in restaurants, and saving the other half for later. I'm going to go get tomatoes, because I want a nice big salad with chicken strips for dinner, and the tomatoes are one of my favorite parts. Summer fitness journal - Whoo!
So, since I'm really going to try (again) to spend this summer getting healthy, I might as well post about it here. Since last Friday, I've been working out for about an hour, almost every other day. Allergies have kind of interfered with this, but I want to get up to an hour workout every other day, and at least a two-mile walk every day other than that. Last week's total: 90 minutes of high impact aerobics, 97 minutes of low impact aerobics, 20 minutes of stretching, 3 minutes of jumping rope, and 30+ minutes of combined aerobic dance in 90 minutes of housework, for a total calories burned of 3,552, or just a little over 1 lb. When I get home (and finish eating any perishable carbs/fruit), I'm re-starting the South Beach Diet. Current weight: 254. Current loss: 1 lb. Measurements unavailable, since I lost my tape measure. I'm going to go do more dance/cleaning. Current Mood: pleased | | Saturday, May 16th, 2009 | | 9:53 pm |
My entire teaching journal
For those who were curious: May 5: Today we covered Circe and watched the film. The kids all had fun with the film; it was slightly more direct than I had been expecting. I’m anticipating my lesson and not thinking about much else. I hope the kids like my activity. The kids also went to the library to type up some of their papers. May 6: Taught my lesson today. I was scared, but the kids seemed to like it. First, I did my Power Point on the Underworld (included in the portfolio) and had them take notes. Then, I asked for three volunteers to be the judges: Rhadamanthus, Minos, and Aeacus. Every other student was allowed to select an envelope with a slip of paper inside. That slip of paper detailed a life that “they” had led, now that they were going to the Underworld to be judged. Some were good, some mediocre, and some awful. After the sentencing, the judges then got to think up punishments for the sinners in Tartarus. First block enjoyed it so much they wanted to do it twice, so we did. Second block seemed to like it too – they insisted that Mrs. M and I each take an envelope. It seemed to work too: all of the kids got the levels of the Underworld correct on their quizzes. After the activity, I read the Land of the Dead section from The Odyssey to the kids, and we watched that scene in the Hallmark movie. Later, I supervised in the library while the 11th graders looked up topics for their term papers. I even suggested a few, since I know a fair bit about the US between 1920-1959. May 7: Read to the 9th graders about the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis, complete with a Power Point. During planning, I got to make up a quiz on the Perils of the Sea… hopefully the kids will do well on it. I also played the Slap Game with them to review vocab, but they got a bit out of hand in second block. One kid was obviously playing ‘Bait the Sub’ the moment Mrs. M left the room – she says she’ll talk to him tomorrow. I kept control fairly well, I think, but we’re not playing that game again. The kids get too riled up. With the juniors, I did an MLA presentation, showing them Easybib.com. I also showed them accessmyjournal.com so they could find some journal articles on their topics. I’m surprised that some still haven’t decided on what to do yet. May 8: Attended a faculty breakfast, which was nice of them to throw. Gave my Underworld/Perils of the Sea quiz today, and the scores have overall been excellent. Only 2 kids total failed it, with most getting 85 or higher, even with no extra credit. We did a quickie review first, but I’m still proud that so many kids did well on it. After that, I helped Mrs. M hand out a Greek vase project (samples are included in this portfolio) and graded papers. I grade papers every day… my red pen is almost out of ink. 11AA was in the library again. I wandered through, asking if they needed help. I was able to help a few more kids decide on topics and point some more towards research sources. Overall, though, I don’t do much with the juniors. That’s okay with me; some of them are almost my age, and I need more practice with them. May 11: Today we finally finished part 1 of The Odyssey and got started on part 2. My voice was nearly gone first block from all these allergies, but I was feeling a bit better by second block. At least I was able to read the whole Father/Son Reunited, the Faithful Dog, and the Test of the Great Bow. I had two activities for the kids: first, I blindfolded a volunteer and had them guess their classmates by voice. One kid got every one right, but the rest weren’t quite so good at the game. Second, I brought in some resistance bands (since I couldn’t ask them to string an actual bow). I had them go from a squat to having the band lifted all the way over their heads. Second block particularly liked this, since the guys got to show off their strength. 11AA, we discussed Of Mice and Men and did some SOL review. I spent most of the block grading papers. May 12/13: No entry on the 12th… 9th grade for the most part completed typing their journals, their god/goddess/hero research paragraphs, and their Cyclops paragraphs. 11AA did library research again that day, while 4th block watched the Of Mice and Men film while I supervised. They didn’t all watch the film, but they were all quiet and didn’t cause trouble. The ASC came to do a presentation on Romeo and Juliet, which turned out to be kind of disappointing. They just lectured on it instead of acting out whole scenes, which they apparently did at the beginning of the semester. Afterwards the G&T students got to stay for an acting workshop which I was supposed to supervise, but within 10 minutes, I was hit with a migraine. I didn’t think to bring any migraine medicine with me, which I will do from now on. On the 13th, both 9th grade classes played Odyssey Bingo review all morning. I helped Mrs. M write the test: I wrote the modified true and false and did the 40 matching questions. I think it’s challenging without being too difficult. We’ll see on Thursday. It was Club Day, so classes were shorter, and some kids came into the classroom to sit and wait for an actual class to start. There was a presentation on dating violence and date rape for the 11 and 12th graders that nearly made me sick: there were kids who weren’t even pretending to pay attention, or were snickering their way through it. I wanted to get up on the stage and scream at them. I’ll stop before I get myself mad again. May 14: Test on The Odyssey, followed by supervising the kids who hadn’t finished their typing in the computer lab. I, to my eternal pride, got all of the tests graded same day. I was right in my evaluation: there were no perfect scores without extra credit, but there were a good number of A’s and B’s. There were a couple of kids who failed, but all of them are weak students. It would be better if there was a class for the kids who aren’t as advanced, but 9th grade is the evaluation year. 11AA, we finished up the film and took a quiz on chapter 5. I graded all of the quizzes, but some kids obviously didn’t read the chapter. I still can’t believe that they didn’t finish it. It’s such a short book, as well as being an absorbing one. I showed the complainers that I am reading War and Peace, for fun. They all think I’m crazy now, but that’s okay. May 15: Today we started on Paul Zindel’s The Pigman. I did a Power Point on Zindel and had the kids take notes. Apparently today would have been his 73rd birthday. Mrs. M and I then did a dramatic reading of the first chapter. Also, there was a vocab quiz that the kids didn’t do too badly on. Got them all graded and recorded, and only two more kids have to take the Odyssey test. Both had been out for over a week. 11AA was in the library researching again. One girl has finished her paper; her rough draft is in the portfolio. There’s SOL remediation going on in the classroom right now, but I have to leave early to make sure this gets in on time. Honestly, I’m going to miss coming in every day after next Tuesday. I haven’t missed more than an hour (when I left early because of that migraine) since I was assigned here, and I like the school. I really enjoy working with Mrs. M, and I’ve started helping some kids with their writing. One is a surprisingly advanced poet for his age, and I’m editing for him. It’s nice to help a kid who has talent. Current Mood: blah | | Friday, May 15th, 2009 | | 1:20 am |
Some updates to the teaching journal
Since I have to hand it in anyway, may as well post it here: May 1: Today the 9th grade classes had their god/goddess party. Each kid had to wear a toga, get up, make a little speech about a Greek god or goddess, and take a bow. The kids brought in food (which was nice, since I forgot to eat breakfast this morning). Mrs. M left the room for a few minutes in both blocks while I did a quick demo for the kids on how to tie a toga – thank God for those years of costuming finally coming in handy. I brought in some extra stuff (hairpins, safety pins, scarves, fake flowers, leaves, costume jewelry), so some kids got their sheets even more dressed up. They really admired my sheet, which is gold satin, bought for just such an occasion. I mentioned my fondness for costumes to Mrs. M and she encouraged me to wear at least one other before I leave. I think I’ll wear my princess gown on my last day. Anyway, getting back from the tangent I was getting on, it was kind of scary being left alone with the kids, but I think I handled myself well. I only had to raise my voice once or twice to get them to pay attention, and a couple kids asked me to help them tie their togas or safety pin them. They even included me in two of the group pictures. 11AA I didn’t do much in, besides do a Power Point on the Lennie-George Dynamic (printed later in the journal). The first class listened to the mini-lecture politely, but the second class was so rowdy I hurried through it just so I could get away from them. Maybe I’ll stick with 9th graders when I start… I think the Juniors knew I wasn’t too much older than they were, and that lessened my authority. May 4: Today the 9th grade kids drew their Cyclopes… or at least got started. The activity outline will be included in the portfolio. I’m still pretty proud of my Monster PP, and I think I did a good job on the Cyclops activity PP. Mrs. M was definitely complimentary. Graded more papers – I’m getting faster at it. I’m starting to notice patterns with the kids. In block 2, four of the kids who noticed that I used some anime in my Power Points came up to talk to me before and after class. It was kind of flattering: they formed a little knot around my desk and all wanted to ask me questions about myself. All of them said it was so cool of me to like anime. That made me happy… I always thought the teachers who liked anime were cool too. For the 11AA kids, I hunted up a copy of the Looney Tunes short ‘The Abominable Snow Rabbit’, which features an abominable snowman based directly on Lennie from 'Of Mice and Men'. Had some nice running around trying to get the darn thing to work, but it all came out in the end. First 11th class loved it. When I told them we were watching a cartoon, they all got quiet and focused on the screen. Second class… they would not settle down until I told them that instead of showing them the cartoon, I could just stand there and lecture about what Lennie’s tragic flaw is. They settled down after that. Mrs. M enjoyed the cartoon; she says she may use it the next time she teaches a class on the book. Mrs. M asked me today if I would like to teach my first independent class on Wednesday, specifically on the Greek Underworld. I said yes, but I’m nervous. Second day
Today I'll give a quick breakdown of the classes I'm in, since almost everyone was in today: English 9, first block: Nice bunch of very sleepy, pretty quiet kids who are not very good at vocabulary. I know, because I've graded two vocab tests in two days. English 9, block 2: Livelier, a bit louder, but they still listen when I or Mrs. M raises her voice. Seem to be slightly better at vocab, but in both classes, it's the biggest weakness. English 11 Advanced, block 3: The smaller Advanced class. They listen fairly politely, don't have to be yelled at, and seem to do their work without a lot of fuss. Lunch: Interesting sitting in the teacher's lunchroom, listening them talking about events. SOL scores were in today, and some of the kids who scored high were shocking and the kids who scored low were very disappointing. English 11 Advanced, block 4: I don't know what it is, but these kids come strolling into the class like a bunch of roosters. Half of them are constantly "showing off", but with displaying their so-called wit, rather than their intelligence. Much harder to get them to listen, sit still, or discuss anything. This class also has a lot of jocks, which surprised me, because the jocks at Stonewall usually would never take Advanced, even if they could have gotten in. Blocks 5 and 6: No class- Mrs. M and I do planning, grade papers, enter things in the gradebook... I actually ran out of work today and was able to spend some time reading one of the books for my senior thesis. So, yeah. I'm doing a lot of Power Points (today the 9th graders had an assignment to draw a Cyclops, and I did a presentation of 20 different monsters to give them ideas. I got a few good 'GROSS!' and two kids in second block actually recognized the Death Note shinagami I used as examples), but I'm okay with that. I'm getting good at making Power Points. I've now given the same presentation on Steinbeck four times, and tomorrow I give a presentation on the Lennie-George Dynamic. Here's hoping I can get a copy of The Abominable Snow Hare... First day of teaching...
Since I have to keep a journal for class, I might as well keep it here. Today in school, I graded vocab quizzes for 9th graders (I couldn't believe some of them... I may sound elitist, but the words were ones I thought everyone knew), ran papers around for my supervisory teacher, made copies, and printed things. My teaching experience today came in the AP classes, where I gave a Power Point presentation on John Steinbeck. Since this is a public journal, I'll refer to my supervisor teacher as Mrs. M. Mrs. M really liked my presentation and had me save it onto her computer to use for future classes. I was definitely flattered. She's really nice, and I enjoyed talking with her. I had less student interaction today, seeing as how I was out of the class half the time running errands, but I'll probably get more as the week goes along. Not too shabby for a first day, but I'm definitely wearing sneakers tomorrow instead of boots. My feet are burning. Also, might want to consider either bringing a mid-morning snack or eating a higher protien breakfast. Then again, feeling hungry is a very good sign for me. Sometimes being spontaneous works out. Yesterday afternoon, I was feeling lonely and bored, so I decided to call up Shawn (I'm trying to get past my stupid hang-up that people who aren't busy will call me). He wasn't doing anything, so I dressed up very nicely and went over to his place. We had Chinese take-out and watched 'Shaolin Soccer'. We decided to take a nap, but neither one of us could fall asleep.. and that was when Shayne called and told us he was in town and asked if we wanted to hang out. We went to meet up with him, when we got a call from Jeannette, who wanted to see if anyone wanted to hang out. So we all went over to her place, and had interesting conversation for a few hours. Then we went home. So, yeah... yesterday was all kinds of fun and I got to see some people I hadn't seen in awhile. I've also resolved to start working on cooking breakfast foods, because I'm currently only mediocre at it. But still.. yay for spontaneous fun. And my allergies are finally starting to calm down: I'm still a bit uncomfortable, but I'm not in pain anymore. Current Mood: content | | Sunday, March 29th, 2009 | | 1:11 pm |
I hate early spring
Really, and truly hate it. Every year the changing of the seasons means nothing but misery to me. Seasonal allergies suck. For the last two weeks, I've been sniffling, dry-eyed, and fatigued. I don't want to eat because my stomach is totally full of mucus, which makes my digestive problems act up. So I'm nauseous, but not nauseous enough to throw up (I've made myself twice in the last two weeks, and it helped, but that's a slippery slope). I've been struck with horrendous stomach cramps at the worst times... like 4 AM when I have a 9 AM class and in the middle of class. And every time I get really comfortable, either my nose fills up and I can't breathe, or my eyes or throat dry up so I can't possibly stay asleep. I've been too tired and annoyed to exercise, and I'm barely eating, so my poor worn-out metabolism isn't getting any help. Stupid pollen. Stupid allergies. The sun came out today after several days of rain, which just means more pollen to me. Anyone else dealing with the scourge of nature? Attack of the Klutzasaurus Rex
Well, I've done it again. Yesterday evening, after spending a lovely day helping dear Caitlin paint her new home, Shawn and I went to a lecture on gun rights. It was a very nice lecture, until they called for volunteers from the audience. Shawn volunteered me. It was a simulation for what you would do in event of a gun attack in a classroom if you were unarmed. While the other girls obeyed the "shooter", and all got shot, I threw my chair, and took a backwards step. There were stairs there. I feel about four feet onto a concrete floor, have a badly sprained wrist, a bruised pelvis, a bump on my head and a strained neck. Don't expect to see me online much- sitting hurts like hell. I'm also walking like a geriatric zombie. But Shawn took me shooting this morning and I shot pretty well for only having use of my left hand and not being able to distribute my weight properly. I got fairly good groupings, even if they were mostly high. And this is going to be a very funny story to tell in the future. Current Mood: Owie | | Monday, February 2nd, 2009 | | 9:43 pm |
Stuff
Whee, it's snowing! We've got about four inches outside, with it still coming down steadily. Yay! For my Twilight (or 'Twitlight' as I've taken to calling it) rips, I'm now posting them on a seperate blog. Maybe I can figure out how to make some money from this :P http://harshlightofreality.blogspot.com/ if you're interested. Chapter 3 is up. Friday night I made two new friends, and Saturday Shawn and I met my too-cute newborn nephew. So, fun weekend all around. Today I took advantage of my first free yoga class at Mary Baldwin. It's at least an intermediate level class, so it was really hard for me, but I'm going to stick with it. After class, I walked a mile before heading off to do my volunteer work. The girl I'm tutoring just needs to get over this crazy idea that she's stupid: she's clever and she wants to improve herself. She was supposed to be writing a little short story on how her future would turn out, and I taught her the value of researching for a story. For example, she wanted to get married on a beach under fireworks on the 4th of July. I helped her look things up, and she decided that Key West fit the bill perfectly. It was really cute to watch how excited she got over finding out things. I hope I can keep helping here. Here's fingers crossed for a snow day tomorrow. Either way, I'm going to bed early.
